Cholesterol Screening For Children

In accordance with a new study, the existing guidelines for cholesterol screening in children would not be applicable in the case of 10% of them who have high levels of LDL or bad cholesterol.

The question of how soon children should be screened for high cholesterol is becoming increasingly imperative in the U. S., with the rate of child obesity reaching 20%.

At present, government recommends screening for children having a family history for the heart disease, such as, at least one parent or grandparent who has suffered a heart attack or stroke, or has total cholesterol levels above
240 mg/dL. They also advice the adolescents whose parents are unaware of their family history of heart disease be screened.

Led by Dr. William Neal of West Virginia University, scientists studied a group of more than 20,000 fifth graders in West Virginia and found that 71% were eligible for cholesterol screening.

Doctors then recommended the families whose kids confirmed positive to the test to change their child’s diet or exercise routines and prescribe medication too to lower their cholesterol. West Virginia has one of the nations top most rates of death from heart disease. The study is being published Monday in the journal Pediatrics
